Description:
The impressive career of the Jamaican reggae singer Keith
Poppin dates back to the late 1960s. Keith Poppin was born
in May 1949 in Westmoreland in Jamaica as Keith Smith and moved to
Kingston at the age of 17. Like more Jamaican singers, his singing
career began in the church choir. Poppin started his first band
called The Robins and recorded several songs for Studio
One producer Coxsone Dodd in 1968. Two of them appeared at
the ‘Rock Steady Coxsone Style’ album.
A few years after The Robins called it a day, Keith Poppin carried
on with Rocking Horse. Underwhile Keith Poppin
also began to build a name for himself as a solo artist and in 1973
he scored his first big hit with the song 'Same Thing For
Breakfast'.
After his first big hit, producer Phill Pratt
asked Poppin to record a single. Keith Poppin went into the studio
to record a reworked version of 'Bad Mind
Grudgeful' which Poppin wrote for The
Robins in 1968. After this single became a hit as well,
Poppin recorded a full length album with Phill Pratt. The album was
recorded at the famous - and recently demolished - Channel
One Studio, a legendary studio which became the
frontrunner in the Jamaican music industry.
But it wasn't just the studio and the equipment that contributed to
the sound. The musicians on Keith Poppin's debut album are
top-class too. The tracks were recorded by prominent session
musicians who also caused a sensation with bands like The
Aggrovators, The Revolutionaries, Bob
Marley & The Wailers, Sly & Robbie and others.
As demand for the album remains strong to this day, Keith Poppin
has asked us to re-release it. Since the original master tapes no
longer exist, we have sought out the best available copy on vinyl
and remastered the album from this source. The album comes with an
insert containing detailed liner notes on how the album came
about.
