The song 'Reggae Fever' was originally recorded in 1974 by the
members of The Pioneers and gained a cult status over the
years because of its references to the skinhead
subculture, whose first wave was by then slowly coming to an
end. But the song itself was actually a remake of the
rocksteady classic 'Blam Blam Fever' by The Valentines, an alias
for The Silvertones. The Pioneers version of the song
'Reggae Fever' was actually issued under the alias Sidney,
George And Jackie and produced by proven hitmaker Dandy
Livingstone.
During the early 70ies reggae music was changing. The heydays of
rocksteady and skinhead reggae were over and were passed by
lovers rock. The Pioneers adapted effortlessly to the new
situation and band member Sidney Crooks (also known als Luddy
Pioneer) began to focus more and more on the production side.
He produced various singles for Pama Records and in 1971 he
started his first cooperation with Winston Groovy (born Winston
Tucker).
Winston previously released around 20 singles with Laurel Aitken,
but was now trying to build out his career independently. His
beautiful and recognisable soulful voice meshed well with
the now popular lovers rock and the cooperation with Sidney
worked out well. Together they recorded various singles and
Sidney contributed to various of Winston's LP's as composer
and producer. The albums 'Back In Time With Mr. Groovy',
'Coming On Strong' and 'Presenting Winston Groovy' (Trojan
Records) were all the result of Sidney and Winston working
together.
As the blood runs where it can't go, the two gentlemen decided to
work together again polishing up The Pioneers classic Reggae
Fever and adapting it to these times.
