Description:
Over the last twenty years, producer and composer Boss
Capone has built up a reputation both as a solo artist and
with his band, The Upsessions. To date, he has
produced and composed 11 albums and countless singles on which he
collaborated with renowned reggae artists such as Lee
'Scratch" Perry, George Dekker (The
Pioneers), Monty Neysmith (Symarip, Seven
Letters) and the reggae pioneer Stranger
Cole. Although early reggae and rocksteady are his main
focus, Boss Capone never made a secret of his love for seventies
dub and roots reggae.
Boss Capone: "I'm absolutely fascinated by the early dub output by
producers as King Tubby and Lee
Perry; what they managed to achieve in their studios with
just a limited number of tracks is just fantastic! It's incredible
how they managed to breathe new life into old riddims and give them
a completely different vibe. But I'm also fascinated by people who
took the genre further, such as Prince Jammy, a
record like 'Kamikaze Dub' has been one
of my favourites for years". After years of recording early reggae
and rock steady, Boss Capone took the plunge and set to work on a
dub record.
For the vocals on this project, he called on none other than
Keith Rowe. The Jamaican legend Keith Rowe gained
international fame from 1967 onwards as part of the rock steady duo
Keith & Tex. With songs such as 'Don't
look back' and 'Stop That Train', the pair became one
of producer Derrick Harriott's top acts. From the
1970s onwards, Keith Rowe continued as a solo artist and scored
another big hit with the song 'Groovy Situation', which he
recorded for producer Lee 'Scratch' Perry. Keith
& Tex have been performing as a duo again since the late 1990s
and since then they recorded five new studio albums and toured the
world frequently: from the US to Brazil, from Hong Kong to Japan,
and from Australia to Germany.
Although a rock steady singer isn't the first name that springs to
mind when you think of a dub album, this choice
was an obvious one for Boss Capone. "Keith and I have known each
other for a while; we've performed together on various
locations and we've previously recorded a single together for
Aggrobeat Records. Keith has a fantastic wide
ranged and beautiful voice, so for me he was the first person I
thought of".
